What a website really costs per month.

From about €1 a month for the domain to €150 for someone who looks after it. Four lines — here's what each one is for, and which you can skip.

1 · Domain

The domain: about €1 a month.

A .com costs roughly €9–23 a year, depending on the registrar. It's the one line you can't skip — keep it in your own name, so you can move your site whenever you want.

2 · Hosting

Hosting: €0 to €20 for most small sites.

A small business site usually runs on shared hosting for €5–20 a month. A simple static site can run on a free plan. Online stores pay the platform instead — Shopify Basic is $29–39 a month, plus card fees.

3 · Maintenance

Maintenance: the line people forget.

Updates, backups, monitoring and someone who fixes things. Small businesses typically pay €30–230 a month. Skip it and the site still works — until a broken form goes unnoticed for weeks.

4 · Extras

Extras you probably don't need.

  • A paid security certificate — most hosts include one free
  • Premium plugins — €30–180 a year each, only if your site really needs one

Three typical budgets

So what will you pay?

  • Business website you edit yourself: about €1–20 a month (domain and hosting)
  • The same site, looked after: from €49 a month excl. VAT — our Care plan covers hosting, domain, backups, monitoring and 1 hour of changes
  • Online store on Shopify: about €30–40 a month for the platform, plus card fees
